Alternative Rock is defined by its lyrics and its distorted guitar. Its reaches back to many parts of the world. Primarily in the U.S. Throughout the 80's it was considered and independent and underground style of music. On the rare occasion an alternative song would hit #1 somewhere. Early american alternative bands consisted of R.E.M, The Feelies, Violent Femmes and The Smiths. As punk rock began to depopularize independent labels signed bands that switched to more melodic songs in the alternative rock genre. Alternative rock broke onto the scene when the Red Hot Chili Peppers released "The Uplift MOFO Party Plan". This is when the commercial possibilities were fully recognized by the record labels.
Other varieties of Alternative Rock include Britpop, Mahtrock and Grunge. Grunge would be one of the more popular varieties of Alternative rock due to a seattle band named Nirvanna. Nirvanna were almost an instant hit. The brought a new soudn to rock and the record labels hit gold.
